My mom had already lost five babies by the time she had me, and she had given up on having kids. I was a preemie—almost 5 weeks early. She couldn’t even hold me until I was 12 days old. When I was little she would say, “I love you bigger than the world.” I would say, “forever and a day.” and she would say, “with all my heart”
